December 2012 - Eagle Extravaganza - our clean-up crew arrived for an all you can eat salmon buffet! Our highest count was over 60 Bald Eagles! Visit the Goldstream Nature House to see our wildlife camera's back in action.
Decmber 5th 2012 Salmon season draws to a close, and "Eagle Extravaganza" is just getting started!

Congratulations to everyone who participated in our 10th annual "Salmon Run 5km"!!!
It was more than fitting that Sunday morning brought torrential downpours flooding the Goldstream River with water. This triggered the salmon to enter the river and start their run upstream just as over 100 human participants were gathering in the Goldstream Campground for the 10th Annual Goldstream Salmon Run 5K. The cool rain and slippery conditions didn't deter the runners as they headed out onto the course and laid down some fantastic times on this "slightly short" 5K with its "hefty hill". A new animal participant this year had some runners trying to pick up the pace as they feared being passed by a MOOSE! That's right...although there are no acutal moose on Vancouver Island, BC Parks mascot Jerry the Moose showed up and ran the soggy course after agreeing to run if 100 people pre-registered. Jerry was looking drenched but stylish running in his custom made "Goldstream Salmon Run...So Should You" technical shirt. (There are lots available for sale in the Nature House in 3 different colours!!!) Overall it was a fantastic day raising funds for the salmon run programs at the Nature House but also just getting out and being active in our Parks! Check out our facebook page for more pictures as we get them uploaded!
Our SALMON camera is on! Be the first to get a sneak peak of the salmon as they enter the river...

Story of the Week...
This visitor made our day here at the Goldstream Nature House. Cole Nessel recently celebrated a birthday and instead of gifts he asked for money to give to a local charity. (Grade 2!!)
When his Mom and Dad asked him where he would like to give, he said "the salmon river". Cole arrived today with a ziploc full of his birthday money and donated here to the Nature House. Staff and Volunteers are mostly impressed with Cole's keen environmental stewardship and thank him for his thoughtfulness!

Goldstream Nature House in the News
If you missed some of the News events about the Goldstream Nature House this past week, we have included a couple of links here. First is a link to the News footage of the cougar. Although the News emphasized the potential danger in the situation (it is always important to respect wildlife and know safety precautions you can take) we were incredibly excited to get such an amazing view of a little-seen animal. You can view Chek News version of the story here approximately 4 minutes into the newscast.
We were also lucky enough to be featured in an Island 30 episode where Chek helped us to get the message out that the Goldstream Nature House does not receive governement funding and we very much need everybody's support. Currently the video does not seem to be on the site but hopefully it will be returned and the link included will be available.
If you are interested in supporting our funding efforts please see our "How You Can Donate" or our "Goldstream Chums" links. You can also find information on donating to the Goldstream Chums Program through Habitat Acquisition Trust's site here.

Our Rare and Unique Cougar Sighting
We are still replaying in our minds the sighting we had early Thursday morning. A feline friend sauntered past the Goldstream Nature House windows... WOW! For most of us it was a first in our lifetime opportunity.
Cougars are elusive animals, active by day only in undisturbed areas to avoid humans (usually). We speculate that because of the gas spill earlier in the week, and public visitation decreased, we were fortunate to have spotted the cougar.
Our 'Cougar in Area' signs will remain posted, although it is noted that cougars can travel 40km in one night. Here are a few safety tips:
- Hike in groups of two or more. Make enough noise to prevent surprising a cougar.
- Keep children close at hand and under control.
If you encounter a cougar:
- Give the cougar an avenue to escape.
- Stay calm. Talk to the cougar in a confident voice.
- Pick up children and make yourselves look big.
- Back away from the cougar slowly.

Goldstream Glows Green!
The first message came through and emotion number one hit: complete disbelief.Shortly it was followed by a second message, this time with a picture attached and the emotions shifted from disbelief to shock sliding into horror and settling in at grief. This was the experience of finding out the Goldstream River was flowing Fluorescent Green!
On Wednesday December 29, 2010 around 3:15pm visitors to Goldstream Park and passing motorists were horrified to see the water in the Goldstream River take on an almost glowing green hue.Hundreds of people stopped to take pictures and video tape the unnatural event. At the Goldstream Nature House, the phone started ringing off the hook and concerned visitors burst through the doors with stories of toxic green water, photos on cameras and even samples in coffee cups.“It was unbelievable” Bre Statham mused, “and completely overwhelming.I was inside the Nature House so I couldn’t see the river and the colour hadn’t reached the estuary yet but then people started bringing in pictures and I couldn’t believe what I was looking at.”Some visitors remarked that the colour was so intense it actually hurt their eyes.A father of another family recounted how his son started screaming “Dad! Dad! The water is slime!!! Pull Over!” as the family was driving north from Victoria. They stopped and were incredulous at what they saw.“It looked like every cartoon or horror movie you’ve seen of toxic waste!”
After approximately half an hour, the green water had flowed into the estuary and the entire estuarine habitat was lime sorbet green this was when grief entered into my heart. At this point I had no idea what the substance was or the degree of harm it was having on everything it came into contact with. All I knew was that it was completely out of our control to stop its progression throughout the watershed. The fire department had been called in, the Ministry of Environment was on site, sympathetic observers were there, representatives of numerous interest groups were taking their own samples and yet nothing could be done to stop the flow of the unknown substance from passing down the entire length of the river in the park, entering the estuary and from there being carried by the ocean to anywhere it could go. What if this substance was killing everything in its path? As worry and grief took a strangle hold on my thoughts, I, like everybody else, had to sit and wait as tests were done on samples removed from the river.
Over the next day and a half it was media mayhem around the river. Goldstream the "Green RIver" made it into the National NEws and many speculations pointed toward the mis-use of a tracing dye used to track water systems as the source of the colouration. Midday on December 31, 2010, the Ministry of Environment confirmed that the samples revealed the presence of Fluorescein which is not thought to be detrimental to wildlife in the concentrations found in the river. For some this revelation allowed the feeling of grief to quickly subside to relief. Howevere, I was left with concern and took a moment to contemplate the potential repercussions of this event both positive and negative.
Initial digging into information on Fluorescein has revealed that it was banned for use in the Chicago River in their annual St Patrick's Day celebrations due to its negative impact on the waterway. This is a bit disconcerting and could be foreshadowing for lasting issues on the river from this mindless prank. However, this event brought out renewed expression of support for the Goldstream River and Goldstream Provincial Park itself. The day after the Green River episod, we saw an increase in visitors at the Goldstream Nature House. It was inspiring for us, the Park Naturalists, to see how many people hold this river close to their hearts. Finally, we must use this even as an educational tool. It is a very clear example of how the introduction of a substance into a river system leads to very quick dispersal througout the ecosystem. Although fluorescein is said to be non-toxic, imagine the impact if it had poisoned everything in its path! We were virtually helpless to stop it and simply observed as it blanketed the sensitive river system full of newly laid salmon eggs. The second concept this event illustrated is the way in which a very small amount of certain chemicals can be broadly dispersed by water. The fluorescein was highly visible thus providing an easily viewable example. Sadly, this happens with substances invisible to the naked eye all the time but passes unnoticed. I hope we are able to turn this unfortunate event into a valuable environmental education tool. Education is why we are here at the Goldstream Nature House.
So in the end, it appears I do not have to mourn the loss of my beloved Goldstream River just yet. As a Park Naturalist, I am faced with grief and loss on a daily basis when I see the living systems, creatures and plants that care passionately abuot suffer and disappeaer in front of my eyes. However, what I have learned from my closest friends and mentors, is to also look outside of these losses and be aware of the immense beauty that still surrounds us. The only way we can protect the natural systems that we love is to inspire others through education and awareness to know, love and therefore protect our fragile planet.
Get outside, join us in the park and walk in beauty!
We just received a huge shipment of bargain books at the Goldstream Nature House!!! Some of the prices will knock your salmon-viewing socks off!!! It’s only the 2nd week of January and the eagle count at Goldstream is at a possible all-time low for this time of year.Saturday’s count of 10 eagles still provided a chance for visitors to get a great look at these majestic birds but was less than expected.Visitors to the park have commented that the Goldstream Park “smells really good!” which might be nice for our sensitive noses but probably means not enough carcasses to keep the Bald Eagles fed. It’s still worth your while to pay Goldstream a visit at this time of year though. You are almost guaranteed to see at least one eagle and the misty damp days have a way of turning Goldstream Park into a magically mysterious forest dripping with beauty.

Hundreds of Bald Eagles Return to Goldstream for the Holidays!
Goldstream Nature House Holiday Hours:
The Goldstream Nature House is open everyday from 9am to 4:30pm except for the following dates:
Friday, December 25th (Christmas Day): CLOSED
Saturday, December 26th (Boxing Day): 10:30am-4:30pm
Friday, January 1st (New Years Day): 10:30am- 4:30pm
Got holiday guests? What better way to show them what a beautiful place we live in by taking them to see hundreds of Bald Eagles in their natural habitat for the holidays!
With the 2009 salmon run having peaked earlier than usual and flood waters washing salmon carcasses into the estuary, the Bald Eagles are arriving early for their annual holiday feast of spawned-out salmon. It is expected that over 200 bald eagles will arrive at the Goldstream Estuary by Christmas 2009. Bald Eagles gather in the estuary where they can feed undisturbed by people. With our remote controlled eagle cam we can take a sneak peak from inside the Nature House at spectacular views of Bald Eagles in their natural habitat. The best viewing times for Eagles is at the low tide, when the salmon bodies they feed on are exposed (Click here for the best low tides this season).
