While Goldstream Provincial Park is most famous for the salmon and eagles during the Fall/Winter part of the year, Spring brings both sunshine and some fantastic outdoor learning opportunities! Your class can become scientists to discover why Goldstream is a great habitat for salmon, go on an insect exploration in our insects program, venture into the “quiet zone” in our estuary program and much more! If you’re interested in heading to the beach and learning about marine life, check out the programs offered at Bamberton Beach.
These 1.5 hour programs are offered in April, May and June. Programs in April and May are available by donation while in June these programs will have a user fee. All of the money raised from these programs goes directly back towards environmental education, click here for more details
1.Estuary Espionage (Grades 2-12)
Take your class into a part of the park normally off-limits to the public! Discover the specialized animals and plants that live in the Goldstream Estuary, and find out why estuaries are such important environments. We’ll use footage from our wildlife spy cameras to show your class who visits the estuary during the rest of the year, too. Wear shorts and old shoes or gumboots and be prepared to get muddy. Only available on low tides, so book early to ensure space. $5 +GST per student (Minimum charge of $140.00 per class).
Why are fish so slippery? How can a sea star fill a bucket with goo? Why do slugs leave shiny trails? Investigate the variety of ways slime is used by animals around us. Participants will learn about the adaptations of mucous and how slime enables animals to live in a variety of habitats. Watch for a visit from some of our local slimy friends. After seeing and hearing all about slime in the wild, learn how to make your own slime at home. $5 +GST per student (Minimum charge of $140.00 per class).
Get lost! A dramatic video, followed by an “in the woods” workshop, will teach your class what to do if they ever find themselves lost in the forest. Discover the lifesaving benefits of orange garbage bags and boxes of raisins! $5 + GST per student (Minimum charge of $140.00 per class.)
This program takes a look at the range of habitats near the Nature House. Learn about the lives of these tiny arthropods and the special body parts that help them survive. Find out about some nifty techniques for finding insects in different habitats including using pooters and pillowcases. Each child will have an opportunity to explore in a variety of habitats and sample the insects living there. $5 + GSTper student (Minimum charge of $140.00 per class).
Finally a program that looks at the incredible spectacle of the salmon fry emerging from their winter beds. We discuss the changes these fry must go through to make a living in the ocean and the difficulties they will face on their long journey. Your class will also look at the habitat requirements of salmon fry and determine just how good a home Goldstream is for fish by measuring stream flows and water temperature, sampling insects, and performing other hands-on experiments. Bring along the fry you raised in school and we’ll see them off. $5 +GST per student (Minimum charge of $140.00 per class).
