Become a "Goldstream Chum"
The Goldstream Nature House is dedicated to nature and outdoor learning and is situated near the estuary of the Goldstream River in Goldstream Park. After a challenging few years through covid, BC Parks Foundation has taken on the challenge of trying to revive this much loved community treasure and bring salmon-run programming back. With the Goldstream Chums program, we are looknig to raise enough funds to ensure all classes interested in participating in outdoor salmon learning programs have equal access regardless of socio-economic status.
This fundraising effort, known as the Goldstream Chums program, raises funds to offset the cost for Vancouver Island school groups to learn about the annual Chum salmon return at the Goldstream Nature House from late October through December. Our education programs explore the Chum salmon return to the river and classes are able to experience the salmon spawning activity in the river first hand. These programs also focus on the impact of salmon on the surrounding ecosystem and the importance of salmon to our way of life on the coast. One of the unique features of the salmon education program at the Goldstream Nature House is its capacity to involve such a large volume of students.
Close to 6000 students from 5 different school districts on Southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands are able to enrich their learning plans with these outdoor nature programs.
This year will mark the 21st year of the Goldstream Chums Program now being run by the BC Parks Foundation. Our goal for 2023 is to reconnect with our community and build on the previous successes of the Goldstream Chums in the past. Each year new members of our local community join the effort to keep the Goldstream Salmon Run programs available to all children, allowing them to witness this incredible spectacle at a reduced cost. We hope that you will consider becoming involved in this worthwhile effort.
